A message from Sarastoa, Florida,states that William Burns, the worldfamed detective, died to-night, aged 70< MR WILLIAM HARTLEY [Special to the ’Stah.’] CHRISTCHURCH, April 15. Widespread regret will _be felt among the officers of the Railway Department at the death of Mr William Hartley after a short illness. He was for many years a well-known figure in the service, Mr Hartley joined 'the, department in Christchurch in 1893.' Later he was stationed successively at Dunsandel, Timaru, Ashburton, Invercargill, Tapauui, Auckland, Oamaru, ; and Lyttelton. He was for some time station master at Lyttelton. He retired from that position in May of last year. Mr Hartley was extremely popular with the public and the staffs under his control. He married Miss Bertha Hill, cider daughter of Mr and Mrs Starr Hill, of Southbridge, and is survived bv his widow and two daughters*
