TARIFF FOR BRITAIN

(Received January 22, at 9 a.m.) The ‘Daily Telegraph’s’ political correspondent says it' is definitely established that an emergency tariff will bo introduced in February. The scope is unknown, but no food duties will be imposed. CABINET CONSIDERS RECOMMENDATIONS (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, January 21. (Received January 22, at noon.) The committee of the Cabinet which has been considering measures for correcting the adverse balance of trade has mhde sufficient progress with its work to enable Cabinet to take decisions on certain broad questions of policy. It is understood that the recommendations of the committee were before a meeting of Cabinet this morning. It is believed that the necessary legislative action to carry out any decision reached by Cabinet will be taken soon after Parliament reassembles. The newspapers anticipate that the chief legislative measures for adjusting the trade balance will impose an emergency general tariff, from which certain imports, hotably foodstuffs, will bo exempt. CABINET CRISIS THREATENED. LONDON. January 21. (Received January 22, at 11 a.m.) The ‘ Sun-Herald ’ service says that a Cabinet crisis, involving Lord Snowdon’s resignation, is threatened in connection with the 10 per cent, tariff. It is understood that Cabinet failed to agree after an all-day meeting. Lord Snowden signed the sub-committee’s report agreeing to 10 per cent., blit it is rumoured that he considered it a minute and not a definite recommendation.
