WOMAN AND DRESS
AH OLD LEGEND The old legend that women in general waste money on fashion dies hard. Mr Justice M'Cardie, the bachelor judge, is surely exaggerating when he says that he believes “ that two-thirds of the money spent on dress by women is spent without necessity.” With all respect to the learned judge we suggest that he is thinking of extreme cases. The majority of women of limited means budget for dress as carefully as they scheme for the kitchen and pantry. Quite a large number of them make their own clothes. That a minority of rich women squander money on clothes is undoubtedly a fact, but rich men have been known to overspend on wine, cigars, etc. The opinion, legal or otherwise, that all women are irresponsible and extravagant in their dress bills is without proof. The marvel is that so many of them still contrive to be in the fashion at so moderate a cost.—From a London journal.
