GREEN ISLAND FIRE PROTECTION
EFFECT ON INSURANCES When negotiations were being made between the Dunedin Fire Board and the Green Island Council for the protection of the borough the question of insurances loomed very large as an important factor in the set off against the lire rate which will be struck by the borough to pay for the service. The aim of the council was to bring about a reduction in fire premiums which would equal the amount of the extra rate and thus obviate any increase in the ratepayers liability. Lengthy negotiations with the Otago and Southland Fire and Accident Underwriters’ Association have just been satisfactorily concluded. . , At present properties in the borougfli are classed under the “ F ’’ tariff. When the agreement the Dunedin Fire Board was entered into the Underwriters’ Assbciation agreed to reduce the tariff to “ E ” class _ In view of the double protection which the borougli will enjoy from March 31 next when an engine and auxiliary staff will be stationed at Green Island, the bor L ough council made application, lor a further reduction. In a letter received by the town clerk, Green Island, the of the Underwriters’ Association advised that it had been decided to raise the classmcation of the borough of Green Island from “ F ” to “ D ” as from January 1, 1932. . . x . . , Of course, this reduction in rates was given in view of the provision in the council’s agreement with the Dunedin Fire Board for the erection of a station shed and the stationing of a
fire engine at Green Island, but it was felt that it would bo more equitable to make the change from “F” tq D n now than to make a reduction to x* tariff for a short period and a further one to “ D ” when the conditions of the council’s agreement with the Fire Board have been carried out. The town clerk (Mr A. L. Burk) states that the above reduction, speaking without reference to any particular building, will mean that insurances will bo reduced approximately 20 per cent., so that the payment of. £750 a year will not constitute so great a problem as at first appeared.
