CAUGHT BY UNDERTOW
YOUNG GIRL SWEPT TO SEA TRAGEDY AT TOMAHAWK BEACH Becoming separated from her companion while bathing on the Tomahawk Beach yesterday afternoon, Rose Isobcl Kydd, aged seventeen years, was swept oiit to sea. The search for her body, continued until nightfall and resumed to-day, has not proved successful. At 5 o’clock Miss Kfdd went to the beach for a bathe with . Miss Peggy Braid. However, they did not remain in company long, as at 5.20 Miss Braid arrived at Miss Kydd’s home at Luke s road. Tomahawk, and inquired if tho girl had returned home, as she was not; to be seen on the beach. Without avail, a search was immediately instituted, and the tragic conclusion was reached that Miss Kydd had entered the water during the absence or her friend, and had been caught in tho undertow. Constable _ Meiklejohn patrolled the beach until dusk, and further searching later in the night was also without result. The light was excellent last night for searching, but an exceptionally, squally wind was blowing off the land. Miss Kydd was employed as a domestic at the Karitane Home, Anderson 9 The Tomahawk beach has long been recognised as a treacherous bathing place, several drowning fatalities having occurred there. The currents are very tricky and the undertow is strong.: Only about two years ago a good swimmer lost his life at Tomahawk.
