—Vice-Regal.—> On Friday their Excellencies (Lori and Lady Bledisloe) will leave Wellington for Christchurch, where they will attend the opening day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting. After fulfilling a number of other engagements, their Excellencies will spend two days at Mount Cook, and will return to Christchurch on November 13. On the 17th they will leave for official visits to Timaru and Oamaru, and towards the end of the month will return to Wellington, where they will remain in residence until after Christmas. Mr V . J. Bardsley, secretary of the Otago Harbour Board, commenced his annual leave yesterday, and is motoring to Nelson. Mr Claude Kingston, concert director for J. and N. Tait Ltd., arrived in Dunedin this morning to supervise the forthcoming season of Jan Kubelik. Air Kingston was last here with Chaliapine and Dame Clara Butt, Mr Stewart Pitt left for Wellington this morning by the north express, “Since our last meeting one of the oldest residents of this district has passed away. I refer to the death of Air Lewis R. Gillanders, who’took a keen interest in borough affairs,” stated the mayor (Air H. E. Holler) at the monthly meeting of the West Harbour Borough Council, held, last evening. It was decided to forward a letter of condolence to the family of deceased. The death is announced from Wellington of Air S. S Williams, at the age of eighty The deceased arrived in New Zeal end by the sailing ship Caroline in January, 1876. For a large number of years he was a wellknown figure in the furnishing trade in Wellington. Air Williams had been in failing health for th« last three years, and his death removes one of the pioneers who helped in the growth of the city of Wellington. He was a man with a wide influence and circle of acquaintances, and his loss will be felt by many in addition to his family. He was a member of the Wellington Bowling Club, and was also a Freemason. His wife predeceased him by a few months.
A Press Association cable message from Fremantle states that among the passengers by the Cathay, which arrived there yesterday, was Dame Nellie Melba. , . , Dr A. J. Hall left yesterday by the express to spend a holiday at Hamner Springs. Grand Hotel guests include Mr and Mrs C. B. Nixon (England), Captain and Mrs J. M. Cameron (London), Messrs E J. Morgan and C. Kingston (Melbourne), Mr L. E. M'Vicar (Auckland). Messrs W. Appleton, R. J. H. : Cox. P. C. Cutts, H. D. Raphael, T, 0. Bishop, J. B. Reid, C. C. Odlin, E, C. Sevier, and A. J France (Wellington), and Mr A. L. Power (Christchurch). . _ Among those staying at the Excelsior Hotel are Messrs P W. Sampson, M. Hawson, G. N. Gill, and F. W. Grenfell (Auckland), and Mr A. E. R. Gilbert (New Plymouth).
