Mrs Chetwynd, who drove her car for 996 miles in twelve hours at an average speed of 82.97 miles per hour, at Brooklands (states an American exchange). In’ doing this Mrs Liietwyucl has beaten the record held by Mr and Mrs prqirbart Dykes of eigbty-oiie miles, per hour for the same time. . i Following the review of the Otago : Girl Guides by Lady Alice Fergusson the officers, of the various companies paid a surprise visit to the home of the provincial commissioner, Mrs C. de R. Andrews, at St. Clair, to celebrate her birthuay. A cake (made and decorated by one of the Guides) had the place of Honour on the table. The party had been kept an absolute secret by the thirty-one guests, and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Sir James and Lady Allen entertained some members of the visiting M.C.C. i team at ‘ their residence, “ Arana,” on Wednesday evening. Among the guests were Prince Dulcepainhji, Messrs Dawson, Allom, and Campbell, Mr and Mrs John Cook, and Miss Joachim. More and more are women invading the field of; sport, and this is occurring in hunting as well ns in other .branches of athletics. For the first time in the long history of the famous hunting pack in Quorn country, England, a woman l has become associated • with its mastership. She is Mrs A. E. Allen was successful in carrying off the second prize in both sections of the Christmas literary competition organised by the Christchurch ‘ Sun. The entries were exceptionally heavy this year, coming from all over New Zealand, from Fiji; and from Rarotonga. His short story was entitled *The Stolen Code,’ and his poem ‘Conjecture.’
