BLAZE IN DOWLING STREET

■ ■ ♦- £509 WORTH DF DAMAGE Damage to the extent of about £SOO was caused when a fire broke out in the tea rooms above the Commercial Bank’s premises in Dowling street this morning. When the City Brigade was called out at G o’clock the fire Igid a good hold, and two machines and the electric ladder were promptly outside the bank. About half an hour sufficed for the men to got the outbreak under control.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but it started in the vicinity of a gas stove in the kitchen adjoining the tea rooms which arc owned by Mrs Lake. Severe damage to the kitchen resulted, and a hole about 10ft square was burnt in tbo floor, which is the ceiling of the Commercial Bank. The flames travelled through the roof of tho kitchen in two places, and reached the University Club rooms, the contents of which wore not damaged to any great extent. Other parts of the building suffered from smoke, heat, and water. Insurances on the lea rooms were the South British Office for £2OO, while tho contents of tho University Club were covered with the Mercantile and General Office for £250. Tho Commercial Bank had insurances with several offices.

A solioitor’s office on the same flat as Mrs Lake’s tea rooms was slightly damaged by smoke, but there was no insurance. A MINOR CALL. At 2.58 this morning the brigade was called to 28 Michie street, Roslyn, where a hothouse owned by Mr Forbes was practically destroyed. Tho cause of the fire is not known. >
