THE ARCADE.

TO Tim EDITOR. Sir, —Whilst tho idea to make a good roadway through the Arcade is a good one, questions arise which must be answered before ratepayers vote on the loan proposal. If they are not answered ratepayers cannot come to a sound decision, and therefore should vote against the proposal. If the widening is to be done on tho lower side it will be of much Joss value than if on the upper side, also be much more dangerous to cross over the Mornington tram lines. If the widening is to be on the upper side it will be more in lino with Manse street, and so more safe. When the land is taken, for making a 66ft road, will there bo sufficient land left to the owners to erect new shops on? If not, then there will be a permanent loss of rates to the corporation, which bears on the question of the price to be paid, but if on the other Hand new shops are to be built the council can charge rates according to the value being now placed by the owners on the property. —I am. etc., J.B.S.C.
