AMATEUR CLUB’S MEET GOOD PERFORMANCES REGISTERED Though it was granted affiliation to the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association but a few weeks ago, the Otago Amateur Cycling Club has been most active in its encouragement of the sport, and Saturday night’s inaugural cycling and athletic carnival at the Caledonian Ground was a very successful affair, thanks largely to the efforts of the president (Mr J. A. Johnston; and the secretary (Mr S. Bremiord), who have been largely responsible for placing the club in its present satisfactory position. There was quite a good attendance of the public,' who witnessed some exciting cycle races during, the evening, the division of the mile into A and B grade handicaps being a progressive step. The A grade provided a rattling good finish, P. Traill (130yds) beating the virtual scratch man, C. M. Nicholson (syds), in the good time of -inin 25sec. In the B grade handicap H. Cooper, the scratch man, got up_ to win in time which was only 4-oseo slower than that returned in I he A grade event. The cycling track has hardened a little, and though it is still soft m places it was faster than has been the case for some time. W. Hodge, the ex-Christchurch rider, won the half-nine scratch race in 1 min 10 3-ssec, and it* the three-mile cycle handicap staged a strong finish to win in Bmin 3 1-osec, one of the heats being won in iimn 52 3-oscc. The latter time was returned by S. Bremford, who was still suffering from an injury received at Mosgiel the previous Thursday. Running events were included on the programme, and L. Wood, the Caversham crack, won the I,oooyds handicap from svds in the good time of. 2mm 22 2-sscc, after running a well-judged race. W. Murphy, also of Caversliam, won the lOOvds handicap off 7yds m 10 4-osec, the runners having to contend against a breeze. Ibc relay (880yds) went In Civil Service from scratch, ’Varsity being second from a similar mark. Mr A. Burk was the starter of both running and cycling events. Results ; HALF-MILE CYCLE SCRATCH RACE. W. Hodge 1 E. Palmer - " C. M. Nicholson 3 Ten starters. This was a good race all the way. Fogarty and Palmer were both in good positions at the end of the first "lap, which was covered at a useful pace. The pace was clapped on along the back straight, Palmer moving to the front, pursued holly by Hodge and Nicholson Hodge challenged spiritedly as he entered the straight, and in' a fast finish won by a wheel from Palmer, who finished a length ahead of Nicholson. Time, Imin 10 3-sscc. 100 YARDS HANDICAP. First Heat.—W. Murphy (7yds) 1, R. A. Malone (s,lyds) 2, C. H, Duff (;i.vds) 3. Five starters. M'Lachlan was content to secure a place, and cased up over the last 10yds, Valk winning by half a yard, a similar distance between second and third. Time, 10 4-ssoc. --Final;— W. Murphy (7yds) \ A. Drumm (51yds) ■’ From an even start Murphy got out. of the holes smartly, and striding well he showed the field a clean , pair of heels, finishing strongly to win by a, yard, Drumm being a foot back third. Time, 10 4-sscc. ONE-MILK A GBADE CYCLE HANDICAP. P. Traill (30yds) 1 C. M. Nicholson (syds) 2 W. Hodge (lUyds) 3 A fast and exciting race, contested hv eight riders. The limit mam Fogarty (50yds), led over the first lap, but 5 with half the distance covered Traill was in front, Palmer, Nicholson, and Hodge being in a bunch about 15yds back. At'. the bell Traill had maintained his position, hut Palmer and Nicholson were moving up. Along the back stretch, however, Traill pedalled hard, and drew away; but Nicholson was not done with, and challenged strongly up the straight. In a thrilling finish Traill won by half a wheel, there being a length between second ami third. Palmer failed out in .the last bit, and did not gain a place. Time, 2min 25sec. ONE-MILE “ B ” GRADE CYCLE HANDICAP. First Heat.—H. Cooper (scr) 1, J. Campbell (30yds) 2. F. Nelson (30yds) 3. Ton starters. Cooper assumed command in the last lap, and won by six lengths in good time, there, being a length between second and third. '1 ime, 2min 29sec. Second Heat.—A. Roscnbrock (2oyds) 1, G. Smith (55yds) 2, F. Deans (Lloyds) 3. Nine starters. Roscnbrock took the lead at the bell, and won by a wheel, there being * length between second and third Time, 2min 30scc. —Final. — H. Cooper (scr) 1 A. Roscnbrock (25yds) 2 F. Nelson (130yds) 3 The limit men were in front until the last lap, at the beginning of which Cooper was lying fourth, just ahead of Rosen hrock. Along the far stretch Cooper, who had been riding a good race, sprinted, and went into first place, followed 1)v Roscnbrock. Cooper was not headed", and won by three lengths, Roscnbrock being eight lengths ahead of Nelson. Time, 2min 25 4-sscc. 1,000 YARDS HANDICAP. L. Wood (syds) I F. J. D. Rolfe (25yds) 2 W. Murphy (40yds) 3 Seven starters. M'Kcrnan (60yds) set the pace from the start, Murphy following him. Wood began at a fast bat, and, with half the distance covered, was within striking distance. With a lap to go, MTvernan was a few yards ahead of Wood, Murphy lying third. Along the back straight Wood, who was running easily, went to the front, and Rolfe also made a well-timed run. Entering the straight Rolfe was coming fast, and, though he challenged strongly, he just failed to get up, Wood winning by half a yard in good time. Murphy was several yards back third. Time, 2min 22 2-oseo. THREE-MILE CYCLE HANDICAP. First Heat.—S. Bremford (scr) 1, C. M, Nicholson (10yds) 2, W. J. Templeton (45yds) 3. Nine starters. At the bell Templeton was in front, but along the far stretch Nicholson and Bremford began to move up. The latter sprinted spiritedly, and won by three lengths from Nicholson, Templeton being four lengths back third. Time, 7min 52 3-5 sec. Second Heat.—P. Traill (55yds) 1, IV. Hodge (20yds) 2, H. Cooper (125yds) 3. Nine starters With a mile to go. Cooper was in front, put Palmer and Hodge were both in a handy position. Palmer took the lead at the bell, and in a good finish bent Hodge by half a length, Cooper being four lengths back third. Time, 7min 55 3-ssec. —Final.— W. Hodge (20yds) 1 S. Bremford (scr) ... 2 P. Cooper and Traill led over the first half of the distance, Bremford, Hodge, and Nicholson being in a handy position. With four laps to go Cooper led Nicholson, Bremford, Palmer, and Hodge, who wore together in a bunch. At the beginning of the last lap Palmer was in front, but Nicholson, Cooper, Bremford, and Hodge were all practically together. Though ’Varsity held a lead of 3yds when the last furlong was entered upon, M'Lachlan ran a fine 220yds, and gradually overhauled Barr, to give Civil Service victory by a yard. Anglican being several yards back third. Time, Imin 37sec. Throwing the. Cricket Ball.—P. G. Ward 1, W. Murphy 2, Trevathan 3. Eight competitors. Primary Schoolboys’ Half-mile Cycle Race.—M. McAllister 1, S. Smnil! 2, H. Howley 3. Seven starters. M/Allister left the field behind in the last lap, and, sprinting along the back straight, he went on to win by ten lengths from Smaill, Howley two lengths back third. Time, Imin 28sec.
