DUNEDIN GUN CLUB
LADIES’ DAY. The opening of the 1928 season lor the Dunedin Gun Club took place at tbo Green Island grounds on Saturday afternoon, and being Ladies’ Day, the members’ wives and lady Iriends gathered together in strong force, and a pleasant outing resulted. The weather was dull, with an absence of wind, hut after a sojourn of two months several ol the clay birds eluded the shooting efforts of several of the members.
Five trophies were allotted (o Hit chief match of fifteen clay birds, and the ladies drew from the “hat” the shooter to represent them. The host scores were:—l). Jolly (II yds) 14 breaks, J. A. Orlowski (]3yds) 14, J. A. Graham (lords) 14, R. McDonald (13vds) 14. E. P. Graham (18vds) 12, H.'Smollio (12yds) 12, and T, Long (11yds) 12. In the shoot off D. Jolly proved the winner after the eighth bird, with J. A, Orlowski second. J. A. Graham was third, R. M'Donald fourth, and E. P. Graham fifth. 'The President, Dir E. G. Turner, in thanking the ladies for their presence and for the dainty afternoon tea supplied by them, thou handed over the trophies to the winning ladies as follows: —Mrs R. Morrison, first (Ljscuit cabinet) ; Mrs R. M'Donald. second (vase): Mrs R. Cal’aghan, third (bedroom clock) ; Miss Parker, fourth (muffineer set) ; Mrs A. A. Eairhairn, fifth (scent bottle). A special prize went to Mrs IV. Morland.
A nine bird sweepstake handicap followed, and with nine breaks, all first/ barrel, E. P. Graham took the first prize, and H.„ Smellie, with eight breaks, secured the second prize. The afternoon was concluded with a six bird double rise sweepstake, and
■ is difficult form of shooting favored the day birds, the total breaks recorded being 25 out of 66. With four breaks each, G. E. Turner and H. Smellie divided the prize money. During the presentation of prizes, opportunity was taken by the president to present the first holder, Mr A. J. Graham, with the “Rutherford Cup,” established for aggregate first barrel shooting throughout each season. In responding, Mr Graham expressed his pleasure in having his name engraved on the cup, and mentioned that he had been connected with gun club shooting for over thirty years, and fully appro-.
