SHAVINGS

The tower portion of the Dunedin Stock Exchange Building is about to undergo its periodical overhaul and painted, a job which, to say the least of it, is extremely ticklish. The contract has fallen to the let of Messrs James Gill and Sons, who usually carry out this work. As soon as the necessary scaffolding lias been erected the painters, who are on a sub-contract, will commence work.

Messrs Miller and White, A. A., R.8.A., moved last week into Mr Edmund Anscombe’s offices in the Union Bonk Chambers, Princes street, where they will carry on their architectural practice in conjunction with thatot Mr Anscombe, who is leaving next month for a tom; abroad. Since entering into partnership Messrs Miller and White nave found their Dowling street premises somewhat congested, and Mr Anscombe’s offices and drafting room will provide excellent accommodation, each partner having his own private room. Good accommodation for perusal of plans is set aside for contractors. One of the most striking results.of afforestation propaganda is the practical interest which the farmers of New Zealand and Australia have taken in this important subject. Jt is not, many years ago since people on the land thought of little else save the “ clearing ” of the land, which meant the cutting out or burning off of forest wealth. The supply of timber had always been so plentiful that conservation or reafforestation was not considered. .Things arc very different today, and farmers are realising the relationship between agriculture and afforestation. Hence it is pleasing to note that, apart from trees being grown for shelter purposes, many farmers are planting out otherwise idle areas with timber that will help in a small way

to make future reparation for past forest demolition, which had no regard for replacement. This development indicates a wider appreciation of the pioneer for greater recognition of forestry and reafforestation, and is quite apart from the movement made in special planting of large areas of softwood for commercial use.
