THE HOME HARMONIOUS

COLOR SCHEMES AND DRAPERIES

The modern apartment to-day is not complete without its off-the-living-room ” nook-” This type of sun room is, in reality, a continuation of the living room, separated either by French doors or an archway, and presents a rather pleasant and interesting problem for the home decorator to solve.

In the first place the purpose of a sunroom of this type is twofold, for it must function as a sunroom and at the same time remain a part of the living room proper. Often there is rather limited lloor space and always numerous windows, all of winch call for careful consideration in the selection of furniture and draperies. The predominant color scheme of the sunroom to-day is peach, green, and henna. To give the room the appearance of much larger dimensions, the floor is covered from wall to wall with a lovely raisin-hued carpet. The walls are softly tinted in a flat wall paint of creamy buff. The combination makes an ideal background for enhancing the attractive SOiu-width reseda green rayon sunfast taffeta overdraperies and peach-hnod voile glass curtains. The draperies are interlined as well as lined, which gives them a distinctive quality for draping exceptionally well over the amber glass hold-backs, which are so popular at present. Multi-cov-ered artificial worsted fringe, trimming the sides and bottom of these draperies, add character and pleasing color contrast to the general scheme. The draperies arc pleated and hung from green enamelled wooden rings on henna-colored enamelled wooden poles, which were cleverly painted at home with a quick-drying enamel. This treatment is decorative, effective, and a simple one to use where there are two or more windows in a group separated only by mullions. hi this way one may treat any group of two or more windows as a unit, hut in every case 50in width material should be used whenever possible. Any length pole topping two or more windows should be supported in the centre by a carved wooden centre ornament painted to match the pole and trimmed in color corresponding to the rings. Life, color, and decorative charm can be added to the room by a simple walnut fernery placed in front of the largest group of windows. The filtration of the sunlight through the combination of geraniums and climbing roses, in their guy red and rose hues, adds exceptional color contrast to the green draperies and soft peach-colored voile glass curtains. This colorful and enlivening atmosphere is carried on up into the waterproof roller shades of glazed chintz with a cream background. The three seallops at the bottom of each .shade arc trimmed with a soft green bullion fringe, which relieves the rather apparent straight vertical and horizontal linos of the glass curtains and poles. The Chinese shade pulls, with their rings of translucent green glass, which are so much in vogue at this time, present another interesting decorative touch to the gay chintz shades. It was thought judicious to make a slip cover for the faded household easy chair rather than go to the expense of having it upholstered. For the purpose of contrast and variety of pattern a 50in striped cotton moire in tones of green, henna, and gold was selected lor the slip cover. t Its seams are corded in plain henna-hued moire. An effective accenting color note, as well as a clover departure from a similarity of textures in fabrics, has been brought out in the use of an old gold antique satin pillow corded with henna. At the left of the easy chair stands a simple, but useful wrought iron floor lamp, on which is mounted an attractive parchment paper shade in the wellknown ship design. The table lamp of Jienmx-eoiored porcelain is fitted with a smart-looking fluted glazed chintz shade, in a mellow lino of cream yellow. It is lined with a cream cambric, which gives a brighter reading light, and it is banded with black linen at the top and bottom. Closely associated with this lamp, which is placed on a modern reproduction ol an old-fashioned walnut gate-log table, are a pair of cast book-ends finished in bronze. There are also the smoker’s accessories of brass, which must not be overlooked.

the simple, hut effective and serviceable, table cover is of plain linen velour, in a subdued shade oi old green, and is lined in a dark sateen. It is edged appropriately with a halfinch fancy artificial silk braid, in a dull shade of'henna and gold, repeating a bit of the lamp base color. At the right <jf tbc table, next the wall and at the extreme left of Ihe sun room, are two rush-bottom walnut chairs, in tlieir popular ladder-back stylo, on which are comlortably-ar-ranged small boxed cushion seats. The coverings are an excellent example ol a Jacobean-jmttcrncd hand-blocked linen in green, henna, gold, blue, and tan, and were purchased at a remnant sale. This same linen also covers the soft cushioned head rest and scat, which is used on the walnut conib-back Windsor rocker. The rocker is conveniently placed near the tabic at the left. The effect of this table grouping, as well as the hospitable and inviting arrangement of the adjacent furniture, is one of artistic charm and simplicity. It has been arranged with much thought as to balance and convenience to the occupants of the room._ Then, too, the careful consideration given in assembling both figured, plain, and striped fabrics has made for balance, both in color and textures. This gives the room an atmosphere of rest and cheer, which bespeaks informality, hospitality; in fact, nil that coes towards making a suiirnom what vt should be—a room with a distinct home-like environment.
