CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY OPENED SINGLES COMMENCE? [Special to the ‘Stab.’] CHRISTCHURCH, January 10. The weather was brilliant to-day for the opening of the fifteenth annual championship tournament of the New Zealand Bowling Association, in which about 550_ players (350 of whom are from outside Christchurch) are participating. To-day’s play comprised five rounds of the singles competition, in which the contestants with two losses drop out. The opening ceremony took place at the Canterbury green, the headquarters for the tournament. In according tho visitors a welcome Mr A. J. Benzie (president of the New Zealand Association) said that ho was pleased to see so many of the old champions taking part. Although the entries were fewer than in some previous years, what they lacked in quantity they made up in quality. Cr D. G. Sullivan, M.P. (deputymayor) welcomed the visitors to Christchurch. It was a unique experience, he said, for him to address an audience from a bowling green; he was more used to tho soap box. He kuef of no game which seemed to arouse the enthusiasm of its followers to such a degree _as bowling. The development of bowling in New Zealand had been phenomenal; there were now twenty centres affiliated to the New Zealand Association, and the chibs numbered 300. SINGLES. —First Round.—
