THE PIECEWORK DISPUTE CONGRESS OF UNIONS. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, July 21. A conference of the iron trades unions’ executives has decided to summon immediately ■ all the Australian trades unions to a congress. The executive desires to meet representatives of every Federal .iron trade union in Melbourne to decide what measures should ho taken to combat the introduction of piecework. ENGINEERING DISPUTE SETTLED. DAILY HIRING ACCEPTED. , SYDNEY, July 22. (Received July 22, at 9.50 a.m.) A settlement has been effected of the strike of the members of the Amalgamated Engineering Union at Robinson’s works. The men accepted the daily hiring system, with payment for overtime at the old rates. [A Sydney message received ou July 14 stated; The first shot in the piecework war was fired to-day when 150 employees of Chubb’s Australian Company,'Ltd., struck as a protest against the introduction of the new system. Similar action was taken in Victoria, when the employees of Messrs Robison Brothers refused to commence work under the new daily hiring system.] CONFERENCE A FAILURE. SYDNEY, July 22. 5 (Received July 22, at 9.55 a.m.) The conference between the parties to the dispute at the Sunshine Harvester Works failed to reach an agreement.
