ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY

The above society will present to its patrons the second concert of the fortieth season on Monday evening next. Jt will compare favorably with any given by tho society in tho past. Variety, combined with a high standard of excellence, has always guided the committee in its selection of the works to lie performed. A glance at the items enumerated below will assure visitors to the concert of a delightful evening’s entertainment. The principal item to be played by the orchestra will bo Haydn’s ‘Surprise’ symphony, admitted by all to ho one of tho most delightful and popular works by this master of melody. The ‘ Cassc-Noisctto Suite’ (Tsehaikowsky), with its quaint melodic charm, will he heard in marked contrast to the Haydn symphony. The ever popular overture will be represented by 1 Egmont ’ (Beethoven) and ‘Euryantho’ (\V»iber), two_ composers essentially different in their ideas of musical construction and form. A splendid selection, ‘ Cinq Mars ’ (Gounod), is sure to be a universal favorite. It includes .solos for different instruments of some of tiie popular melodies from the opera. The concluding item will be a. march, ‘Washington Greys.’ Mr Coombs, the society’s conductor, has rehearsed the numbers to be played at this concert, and patrons are assured that it will compare favorably with the best yet given. The assisting vocalists are Miss Ray Stubbs and Mr R. B. Macdonald. Miss Stubbs will sing the aria ‘ Love and Music ’ from ‘ La Tosca ’ (Puccini) and ‘A Dream Garden’ (Montague Phillips). Mr Macdonald’s songs arc ‘The Sword of Ferrara ’ (Field Bullard) and ‘ The Great Awakening ’ (Kramer). The selections of these songs speak for themselves.
