LADIES' HOCKEY

PRESENTATION OF GUPS On Monday night last the presentation of cups won by the various teams during the season war held, there being a large representation of players from the various clubs in A, B, and secondary schools’ grades, together with representatives from the Men’s Association and the Otago Hockey Referees’ Association. Mrs R. Hudson (president of tho Otago Ladies’ Hockey Association) presided. Before making the presentations, Mrs Hudson congratu Jated the teams on their play during the 1926 season, especially the Otago representative team on its play at the dominion tournament hold in Invercargill, whore it won tho Gordon Cup. Mrs Hudson also welcomed the St. Hilda’s College team, and wished it every success in its future hockey career. It had been very encouraging to know that several more secondary schools’ hockey teams had entered this year for the competition, which augured well for the future.

Mr J. Martyn. manager of the Otago representative team at the recent New Zealand tournament, gave a short review of the tournament play, and stated that the Otago team had given a very good account of itsel” The team came third in the tournament—a fact which had not been very clear to some supporters. Mr Martyn stated that Southland and Ruahine (1925 winners and runners-up respectively) had tied for first place. Canterbury, Otago, Eastern, and Wellington were all equal. These teams then played off to find a winner for the Gordon Cup, and alter some great play Otago proved victorious. The first match played was against Canterbury, and after heavy rain the ground was practically a bog. Tho result was 3 goals each. Otago had not quite recovered when it met Southland in the next match, which_ somewhat accounted for tho heavy scoring against Otago, and, while not wishing to detract from Southland’s win, there really was not a difference of eight goals between tho two teams. The match against Eastern B was.not very strenuous. Otago winning by 3 goals to 0. The match with Canterbury was, perhaps, the best game of the tournament. At call of time both teams were equal, and bad to play an extended spell, Otago retching the deciding goal. In the final for the Gordon Cup Otago beat Eastern A by 3 goals to 1. Both Mr Martyn and Miss Campbell (chaperone) stated that they were very pleased to be associated with Otago, which was a most popular team at the tournament. Mr Martyn reported that the arrangements made by the Southlond Ladies’ Hockey Association for the carrying out of the tournament and for the entertainment of the visiting teams were worthy of the thanks of all concerned. In consl ision, he suggested that next season, if a team should be entered for the New Zealand tournament, the selectors should be chosen earlier, and this would enable the team to bo chosen in good time so that it could have more practices. Mrs Hudson then called upon tho captains of the winning teams to receive the cups on behalf of their teams. Tho winners were as follow: —A grade competition, Otago; B grade competition, Triangle; secondary schools, Col--I,mba; seven-a-side tournament, A grade, Otago (Shaddock Cup) ; seven-a-side tournament, B grade, ColumLa (Ritchie Cup). Mrs Hudson apologised for the absence of the mayor (Mr H. L. Tapley, e vice-president of the association), who congratulated tho winning teams, and wished tho association every success in tho future.

Mrs G. A. Nelson (a vice-president) voiced the feelings of all present when she spoke of the sincere thanks due to their president, Mrs Hudson. MrsHudwas one who had worked behind the scones, and during this season, as in past seasons, had done an immense amount in the interests of hockey. Mrs Nelson proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Hudson, and also to Mr J. Mariyn and tho selectors for their valuable services in connection with the Otago representative team, and also to the Referees’ Association, for so ably supplying referees during _ the whole season. It. was very pleasing to note that some members of the Referees Association —-Messrs H. >l. Smith, J. Martyn, J. Gray, D. Miller, C. J. Hayward' and D. T. Woodfield—rendered services at the New Zealand tournament. ~ , , , Mr Gow (of the South Canterbury Association), Mr R. Wallace 'representing the Referees’ Association), and Mr ILJ.
