Suspicion for a time attached to Air Bernard Kirton, a member of the Sydney firm of Messrs Kirton apd Earnshaw, who travelled from Singapore to Java on the same steamer as Mrs Maefie, and he was detained by the Dutch police, but later he was completely exonerated. It was then suggested that some of the hotel boys had murdered Mrs Maefie iu order to secure tier jewellery. Mrs Maclie’s maiden oame was Sofia.
