SPORTING

RUGBY,

AUCKLAND BEATS POVERTY BAY. At Gisborne Auckland beat Poverty Bay by 11 points to 6. The winners gave a brilliant exposition, and were superior in back and forward. The fast, heavy Auckland forwards, Batty, Finlayson, and Keene, were prominent in dribbling rushes, while the Auckland backs, with gregt combination, attacked vigorously. These efforts, however, were kept down largely* by solid tackling. M'Mauus, the Auckland half-back, played a great game, and Goodacre, at full-back, saved repeatedly. For .Poverty'Bay Piki Smith (half-back) and Woods (full-back) played brilliantly. Jack Hecney and Matthews showed outstanding merit in the forwards. The first spell ended 3 all, Dean scoring for Auckland and Murland’ for Poverty Bay. In the second spell Sheen scored for Auckland, and Syme converted, and also kicked a penalty goal. Piki Smith scaled for Poverty Bay.
