MELBOURNE POLICE STRIKE

(Received December d, at 11 a.m.) An unexpected development occurred at a sitting of the Royal Commiss'on which is inquiring into the circumstances of the police strike, when the chairman ! (Sir John Monash) announced that a : fresh commission had been received limiting the scope of the inquiry to the general i state of the efficiency and conditions of ■ the force before the strike, the causes ; that moved the men to refuse duty, and j I,he consequences that arose. The raati tors that have been removed from the I scope of the inouiry are the present state i of the force and the necessity, if any, of better police protection throughout Victoria. This is regarded as an intimation from the new Ministry that it wishes the inquiry to Qu-d as soon as possible!
