A BUILDING LOAN,

The Government Savings Bank on Tuesday will launch a loan of £1,000,000 on tho local market for the purpose of building homes. Tho interest will ’be 51 per cent.

TIMBER COMPANY’S PROFITS.

MELBOURNE, December 9.

Tho net profits of the Kauri Timber Company for tho half-year ended August are £74,041. A dividend of 4 per cent, has been declared, making a total dividend for the year of 8 per cent., £10,041 has been added to reserves, and £27,709 carried forward.

THE MEAT SUBSIDY,

MELBOURNE, December 9.

The Commonwealth Government has decided, owing to the delay in the various States in passing legislation respecting the taxation of cattle, that it will continue the payments of tho meat subsidy as a temporary measure.

TASMANIA’S FINANCES.

MELBOURNE, December 9,

Dr Earle Page informed a deputation of Tasmanian politicians that the Commonwealth Government was already contributing 16 per cent, of Tasmania’s total revenue against 7 per cent, to New South Wales. Before tho Commonwealth Government could increase its present contribution from £85,000 to £200,000 Tasmania would have to exploit her taxable resources, and then submit a further statement to tho Commonwealth Government.

THE STRIKING POLICE,

SYDNEY, December 10.

The Police Association refused to listen to a deputation from tho Victorian police. While the association sympathised with tl’.eir grievances, it disagreed with the action of striking. It agreed to permit voluntary subscriptions to he sent to the strikers for their assistance.
