THE HILL TRAMS
PITT STREET ROUTE FAVORED. The Tramways Committee reports that in compliance with the request of the Public Works Department steps have been taken to ascertain tho estimated cost of regrading London street and Heriot row as alternative routes for the proposed tramway to Maori Hill. 'Hie city engineer’s report indicates that regrading of tho London street route would cost approximately £4,500, and the Heriot row route up to £22,195. A further £6,000 would bo required for walling and re-form’iig London street to suit tho Heriot row level. The cost of purchasing properties, and the amount of compensation that will need to bo paid for altering street levels have not been included in the estimate. The work would leave a two level street at Heriot row, the cutting at one point reaching a depth of 40ft. The city engineer adds that the resulting grades will be steeper than desirable. Arrangements have been made to further represent to the Public Works Department the advantages of the direct route to Maori Hill via Pitt street. The new Whitecross rope for the Roslyn line has been received, and will bo put into service at once. The committee has given instructions to obtain quotations for a duplicate rope immediately. It is tho intention that this course bo followed in the case of new ropos for all lines, so that there will always bo a duplicate rope on order as a now rope goes into commission. Authority has been granted to accept the quotation of Messrs John Chambers and Son, Ltd., for the supply from stock of a Rex concrete mixed at the price of £220. There is now practically constant work for a machine of this description.
