FREIGHT REDUCTIONS

(Received April 21, at 9.10 a.m.) Freights on agricultural products have been reduced from 75 per cent, to 50 per cent, above pre-war rates, general merchandise to 60 per cent, above pre-war rates, except coal, iron, ore. steel, and similar heavy goods. Since November, 1921, reductions in goods and passenger rates and dock dues have cost the companies thirtyfive millions yearly. Present concessions bring the cost to forty-four millions, though the wages hill is still 136 per cent, above pre-war level, and wages form two-thirds of the total railway costs.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
