Mv W. S. Culbcrt, who has been in charge of the Colonial Mutual Life Office, has been promoted to the position of chief inspector of the ordinary department for Otago and Southland. Mr J. Laing has taken over the position of superintendent of the local office.

Mrs IT. Lindo Ferguson was entertained by the Otago Women’s Club last evening on the occasion of her return from a holiday tour of China, Japan, and Canada. Mrs Edmond extended a cordial welcome home, and a large bouquet _of violets was presented by the gardening circle; Mrs Ferguson described her tour, and exhibited a number of curios. Mr H. L. Smith, who is leaving the Dunedin branch of Messrs P. Dayman and Co. to take over a more responsible position with the Auckland branch of the firm, was presented by the staff with a valuable afternoon tea service and a case of fish knives and forks. Mr and Mrs Smith leave on Tuesday next for the Northern city. The Rev. V. G. Bryan King has returned from Alexandra substantially improved in health. It will be some little time yet, however, before he will bo ready to take up his former duties. Mr H. Coull, of the firm of Messrs Coulls, Culling, of Wellington, was a passenger by the north express to-day. Mr P. B. Foote left this morning for Wellington on business. Mr R. Hudson was a passenger for Wellington by to-day’s express. Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., left this morning for Gisborne, to which district ho has been transferred from the southern district. Mr H. J. Dickson, S.M., who was promoted from the positou of clerk oi the Court at Hamilton, arrived in Dunedin last night, and will temporarily fill Mr Levvey’s place. The Rev. R. Eairmaid, who with Mrs Fairmaid has been spending a short holiday in the country, returns to Dunedin this evening, and will resume duty at South Dunedin Presbyterian Church tomorrow. Mr H. W. Jones (Macky, Logan, and Caldwell) returned to Dunedin last night after a business trip to Auckland. Our Christchurch correspondent telegraphs that at the inaugural meeting of the Southern Cross Assurance Company's directors, held at Wellington this week, Sir Joseph Ward was appointed chairman of directors.
