OTAGO CHESS CLUB
THE SEASON OPENED. The Otago Chess Club's 1922-23 season was officially opened last evening by tho mayor (Mr J. S. Douglas). The Mayor said that ho felt honored in being again asked to open tho season. He had performed tho opening function last year, lie hoped to take part in the hearty welcome which the Otago Class Club would extend to Mr Koslich, the well-known international player, who would visit Now Zealand in the near future. The speaker referred to Mr Davies, tho Olago Chess Club member, who represented New Zealand in tho Australasian championships, and expressed regret that Mr Dunlop could not go. The Chairman (Mr T. M. Gillies) said that if tho public only knew tho value of chess in mailing lasting friendships there would bo a greatly increased membership. The game, which most people imagined a difficult one, was not really so, but players could make, it a hard one. The Otago Chess Club’s junior championship was won by Mr J. S.
