Mr E. Alex. Duncan, who recently returned to Dunedin yia United States of America and Australia after an absence of just on three and a-half years with the >".Z.E.F., has recommencod practice ■vrith the legal firm of Duncan and MacGregor, of -which he is a partner. Mr C R. C. Robieson, general manager State Fire Insurance OfhVo, is at present on a business visit to Dunedin. Mr C. W, Kibblewhite has been appointed head master of the Bannockburn School, and Mr W. G. Mayer first assistant at the Palmerston District High School. Mr E. A. Borrow has been appointed organist of St. Matthew's Church in succession to Mr Sidney Wolf, who has resigned. Mr Borrow will commence his new duties on Easter Sunday. Mr A. Cameron, Hampden station master, has received notice of his transfer to Darsedin. _ Mr J. Murray, Deputy Commissioner of Stamps in Dunedin, who has been promoted to ChristchuTch, was yesterday waited upon by the president, vice-pre-sident, and secretary of the Otago Law Socioty, and presented with a letter from the society expressive of tho appreciation of the. members of the legal profession of his uniform courtesy and his services as Deputy Commissioner of Stamps, and of the skilful manner in which, during the last 10 years, he has carried out his duties to the Government. A pleasant ceremony took place at the office of Braithwaites, Limited, last evening, when tho employees assembled to take leave of Mr Robert Robertson (manager), who is leaving in a few davs ior a trip to the Old Country, calling at Japan .and America en route. Mr Green voiced the sentiments of the employees towards Mr Robertson and his wife (who is accompanying him), and asked him to accept small mementoes for her and himself. Mr Robertson feelingly replied. Ho expects to bo away for about 12 months, and Mr H. 1. Green (accountant to the company) has been appointed actincrmanager and secretary during his absence. A London cable announces the death of Mrs Humphry Ward, the well-known novelist, essayist, and playwright, at the age of 68. Deceased was a native of Hobart, Tasmania, and was a granddaughter of Dr Arnold, the famous head master of Rugby. Brigadier-general G. S. Richardson, general officer in charge of Administration, is sufrering from bronchitis, and has fceen ordered to tho seaside. The -Minister of Internal Affairs (Sir Francis Bell) arrived in Christchurch vesterday. This afternoon the Minister was to open Lancaster Park as a public reserve, and he will return to Wellington by to-night's ferry boat. Mr 0. Densem, a member of the St. Kilda Borough Council, who has held the position as local foreman to the New Zealand Express Co. fur over 42 years, has resigned in order to enter into business on his own account in Dunedin. Mrs James Macfa-rlane, whose death took place at Devonport, Auckland, yesterdav. resided for a number of years at Port Chalmers, where she was much respected. Her husband, Captain Maofarlane, brought out to New Zealand several of the first Union Company eteamers. and he aftuwariits succeeded Captain William Thomcon hei-e as harbor master for the Port of Oiago. After retiring from << rvi<_e Captain Micfarlp.no went to live at Auckland, where he still resides.
