* ADELAIDE GRAND NATIONAL MEETING. Following is the result, of the Graud National Steeoleehase, about 3m, ran on Saturdav:— Cuiluleraine (10.11) 1, Hawkwing (10.4) 2, Edinol (10.10) 3. BASKET BALL. The annual report of the Kaituna I/ra-n Tennis Club states that the season 1917-18 was marked by prosperity and increased activity. The male membership was maintained at 33 (11 of whom are on active service); but on the ladies' side there was an increase from 17 to 27. Club tournaments were commenced as usual, the entryfees (£5 3s- 6d) being donated to the Otago Lawn Tennis Association, winners being content witli certificates. The following members are still serving the Empire with credit at the front:—E. Reid, A. S. Whit-c-ombe, N. Wood, J. S. Nicolson, P. H. lustone-,-. L. G. C. Kvle, J. C. Anderson, R. N. Vanes, M. J. M'Keefry; Dr Gordon, and L. Bennett. Since last annual meeting a letter (accompanied by cigarettes 'or chocolate) was sent to each, conveying the good wishes of the club. The soldier members sent hearty acknowledgments, and at lastest advices were all well. A roll of honor has been placed in the pavilion, the list comprising 16 names. Practically every eligible man in the club is now on service. During the year the- members rendered splendid assistance in connection with patriotic movements. In aid of the Y.M.C.A. war funds substantial sums were raised. The ladies are specially deserving of thanks in this connection. In addition members contributed £l3 19s 6d to the Otago Lawn Tennis Association's fund for providing a cot. at the Red Cross Convalescent Homo at Montecillo. The finances of tho club are in a, good position. Quito a number of the members were not able to take advantage of the courts, having continued membership in order to help the finances. The club a.gain made a special donation to the Otago Lawn Tennis Association, adding to their foes sufficient to raise the sum to £lO 10s. A considerable portion of the club's credit balance will be absorbed by the top-dressing of the courts and the carrying out of other improvements and repairs, which it is hoped will be effected before opening, and which will certainly enhance the enjoyment of members.

Tho Oamaru Trotting Club have engaged Mr W. H. M'Dougall to manage ths totalisator on Labor Day (their annual meeting). Additional windows are to be provided, and 10s tickets will be available, which has not been the ca?s in the past. The annual telegraphic chess match between tlie Wellington and Otago Chess Clubs will be commenced next_ Saturday evening, and finished tho following Saturday. The following will be the teams: Wellington: R. J. Barnes, W. E. Magon, A. N. 0. Davies, N. MacKav, F. N. Kelling, P. Still, XL James, D. Godtschalk, S. Gyles, H. O. Lee, (1 A. M'Nair, E. S. Taylor, D. L. Bruton, A. Clark; emergencies—W. C. White, C. W. Tanner, S. Faulkner. Otago: R. A. Cleland, 0. Balk, R. N. Stewart, H. F. Hamel, 0. Arntman, W. G. -Stonhouse, A. Ellis, G. D. Wright, L. D. Coombs, S. S. Myeiv, A. E. Ward, W. H. Allen, Rev. Friber* H. H. Henderson; emergencies—D. H. Hastings, W. Warman, and J. Kay. The Otago team are not necessarily in order. The umpire for Wellington will be Mr W. Alexander and the scrutineer Mr T. M. Gillies.
