CITY POLICE COURT. (Before J. R. Bartholomew, Esq., S.M.) Drunkenness..—-Two first offenders were each fined 10s, or 48 hours. Allah Aitchison (for whom Mr Irwin appeared) pleaded guilty to drunkenness, and also to casting offensive matter in Frederick street.—He was fined 5b or 24 hours on the first charge, and 40s or seven days on the second.

ByJaw Cases.—Arthur Hollie, William Buddicombc, William Carter, and James Stevens each pleaded guilty to a charge of going upon the railway premises for the purpose of solicitiiijg custom or hire.— Suib-inspeotor Fouhy sa/d the offence happened about 4 o'clock on the 22nd uft. They applied for hire,. Hollie and Carter had keen before the Court .previously; the other two had Hanlon, who appeared for three of the ; defendants, submitted that it was a very venial offence. There was a line of demarcation over which they were not supposed to go: It was show time, and they were naturally keen and anxious to assist those who were arriving. There was practicalJy no harm done to anybody.—His Worship : Except to their fellow-expressmen, by getting ahead of them.—Mr Hanlon : % 19 only a question of a yard of two. ,He submitted that men who were, keen to get work were to be commended, as there were so many who were not anxious to work—The Magistrate said that there had been a considerable number of complaints with regard to the matter, and in any case it was not playing the game with regard to the other expressmen. He had intimated last time that df the practice were not stopped he would have to impose a heavy penalty. Hollie and Carter would be each fined 20s, with' court costs (7s); the others wpuld be each fined 10s, with court'' costs (7s). Arthur Peat, charged with riding a'bicycle on a footpath in Caversham, was fined ss, without costs. For allowing a cow to wander on the Main South road, Caversham, William Bateman was fined os and costs (7s). Richard .Smith, charged with driving an express in Princes Street at a speed greater than six miles an hour, was similarly dealt with. Maintenance.—John Bree (who did not appear) ordered to pay 10s a week for the maintenance of his illegitimate child, with expenses (£5 ss), past maintenance (£3 13s 6d), and cost* (£2 2s). Mr Wilkinson appeared for the complain-ant.—-Edwin James Warren was charged with failing to provide his wife and children with maintenance. Mr J. B. Adams appeared for the complainant, and Mr W. L. Moore for the defendant.— Guardianship and maintenance orders were granted by consent, defendant to pay 15s a week for his wife'a maintenance.

Defence Cases.—William Richard Sheridan applied for exemption from attendanco at the annual training camp.—The applicant said he was m No. 2 Company, N.Z.F.E., and had been out of work for some time until just (before camp, when he secured steady employment. He was a married man and had "one child.—Captain Hickey said that as> far as he could gather this was a genuine case. The applicant . had attended other parade*, and was good when on parade. If be was not exempted now he would have to go to the extra training camp.—The Magistrate said that he thought it was a meritorious case, in which he would be justified in granting 'exemption. The applicant was the breadwinner of a home, and if he had to attend camp it would interfere with his earnings. He was not a shirker. Exemption would be granted. Jas. Connor, mental hospital attendant, applied for total exemption. Ho said he had tried partial exemption, but, owing to the nature of his work, it was a failure.—His Worship said the duties of a mental hospital attendant were of a very special nature, and no doubt hardshin would be inflicted on the applicant if he had to parade. Exemption for 12 months was granted, the ajjplicant to renew his application if under the same employment at the expiry of that term.
