It is stated that there is a prospect of a triangular contest for the mayoralty at Maori Hill, the possible candidates being Messrs P. L. Clark (the Mayor), K. S. Clark, and S. N. Brown. A keen fight is also anticipated for the positions on the council. Joseph Tunnidiff, a seaman on the barque Jean L. Stanford, was arrested yesterday afternoon by Constable Hurley on a charge of deserting from his vessel. He was subsequently brought before Mr W. R. Haselden, S.M., in the. City Police Court, and sentenced to 24 hours' imprisonment, after which he would he put. back on his ship. THE VAN HOVTEN'S COCOA WINDOW DISPLAY COMPETITION. - The judges have awarded the prizes offered bv Messrs Van Houten and Zoon for the best-dressed windows as follows: —First prize (£ls), Hunter and Etheridge, Georgo street, Dunedin; second (£7 10s), Gilmour Bros., Walker street: third (£2 10s), W. M. Roberts, Northeast Valley. Five consolation prizes of £1 each are awarded to the following in the order here printed: —M'Kay Bros., Eoslyn; J. Turner, Port Chalmers; J. Peterson, George street.
