MELBOURNE, December 23.

One hundred and two degrees was registered in the city yesterday. A fire at Bendigo destroyed the premises of Faul (ironmonger) and Marks (auctioneers). A quantity of cartridges kept up a fusillade, and caused much excitement, as well as interfered with the suppression of the fire. The damage is estimated at £IB,OOO.
The postal revenue for the past year increased £10,584. The estimated loss through the introduction of penny postage was £470,000.
The Federal Parliament has adjourned till January 15.
The report of the Postal Department shows that during the year 566 million letters and post cards passed through the post—an increase of 70 millions, and an average of 95 letters and post cards per head of the population. The report states that the Government are still strongly in favor of a State-owned Atlantic cable, and advocate the calling of a conference. New Zealand approves of co-operation, but Canada is indefinite. HOBART, December 23.
The Premier has asked for a dissolution. It is expected that the elections will be held in January. PERTH, December 23.
Six professors (four Australians, one Englishman, and one Canadian) have been appointed to chairs in the university.
