A unique case, sajd tc be the first of the kind in New Zealand and probably iu the wor'd, was heard before Mr Riddell, S.M.. to-day. Patrick James Murphy was charged that on the 25th February last, at Wellington, he offered to accept money as an inducement to abstain f-om '''bidding as an intending- purchaser for the license of Crown lands. The penalty for tlie offence, as provided bisection 69 of the liand Act, 1908. is a fine of £IOO or 12 months' imprisonment. It was alleged that. Murphy, who held a nm adjoining that of Edward Spooner, met- the latter outside the office of the Commissioner of Crown Lands when g'poonsr was about. to enter to bid for the purchase or renewal of the license for his own lease, and offered to accept £2OO to refrain from competing iu the bidding. The cross-examination of Spooner was apparently directed to show a certain amount, of personal ill-fe*lin?r between the two men. The case is proceeding.
