SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

The Arthur Street School Committee met last night, Mr J. Kemnitz being chairman, itm head master’s report showed the roll number to be 484-263 boys and 221 girls—with an average attendance of 426—237 boys and 189 girls. Mr Lawless (relieving teacher) began his duties on April 1. !Mr Begg, who has been appointed to succeed Sir Barrett, will assume his duties on May 1 He wrote advising tho Committee that he trusted to bo present'on tho date stated. The members of Committee express sincere regret that, owing to a. change in the boundaries of school districts, Mr Sligo wou*l be ineligible as a member of the new Committee, and a hearty vote of thanks was extended to him for his valuable services as a member of Committee, extending over a period of thirty years. Mr J. A. Haslett presided over the Mornington School Committee’s meeting last night. Correspondence was read from the Education Board referring to certain alterations to be made to thp school buildings. Tho head master’s monthly report showed the roll number to be 447 (247 boys and 200 girls), with an average attendance of 418.10. It was also reported that on the night of the 15th ’inst. the school had been burglariously entered by some person, who burst open eight cupboards, evidently in search of money. Apart from the breaking of the locks no real damage was done, nor had any articles of value been missed. The Visiting Committee (Messrs Mocdy and Henderson) reported that everything about the school was in good order. A list of suitable books had been compiled, with a view to forming a school library, and the Education Board, in addition to their subsidy, would shortly have a bookcase put in a convenient place in tho school. The treasurer’s statement for the year ended March 51, 1909, showing a credit balance of £45 12s 2d, was adopted. The draft of the annual report was adopted.
