DUNEDIN HARRIERS.

Following is the tenth annual report of the Dunedin Harriers, to be submitted to the general meeting on ■ Friday:— We desire to congratulate members on the very successful season just closed. Ten years have passed since the club was formed under the guidance of Mr It. j. Jackson. Since that timo our progress has been steady and sure, and at present wo still hold the position of premier club. It is fitting that wo should in some way commemorate this period, and wo hope suggestions for so doipg will bo submitted at the annual meeting. The membership of the club stands as follows:—Active, 47 (runners, 45); honorary, 13; lion, life, 6; hon. officials, 6; total, 72. During the season twenty-one runs and races were hold, the average attendance being 27.25. Attendance badges were secured by Messrs H. Crawford, F. Hayncs, D. Hodgson, ,T. Hodgson, G. Jackson, F. Mace, A. M'lndoe, F. Parker, B. Roscvear, J. Wright, and N. Anderson. Your Committee acknowledge with thanks donations and prizes from Messrs J. R. Glcndining, W. F. Edmond, and M. W. Johnson. C. Hayncs, F. Mace, W. Ross, Dr Donald, Mesdames Rainsford and TM'ludoc, the Port Chalmers and St. Joseph Harriers, and also the ladies who greatly assisted us at tho Port Bead Race—viz., Misses Bonnin, Morrison, Melville (3), Perry, Templeton, and Mrs Templeton. Our thanks are also duo to Mrs W. J. and PI. G. Burk and Mrs R. Fox for the very enjoyable social on the 12th September; to the Tahuna Park Trotting Club, the Wakari, Green Island, Albany Street, Macandrcw Road, and George Street School Committees, tho Dunedin Jockey Club, Forbury Park Land Company, and the St. Kilda Council for the use of their grounds and buildings; to Messrs Paterson and Burk for tho use of their | office, and to the Press for the amount of space placed at our disposal. Wo are also indebted to the landowners and farmers around Dunedin for permission to, run over their grounds, and we hope members will continue to take care of fences and hedges which they may be negotiating. Owing to the near proximity of other races tho number of entries for the Port-Dunedin Road Race was reduced to forty-five. Notwithstanding this the event was a great success, and the attendance of the public large. The weather being all that could be desired, our anticipations for a record race were realised. Mr H. C. Murray's record of 43min 21sec was broken by Messrs M'Knight (41min 45see) and Beatson (41min 56sec). We desire to thank our sister clubs for their support, am*-also congratulate the Caversham Club in providing both the winner of tho Hooper Challenge Cup and the fastest (record) time. Fourth luterclub Cross-country Championship Teams' Race: Under the management of the Otago Centre, this keen event was again a great success. Besides local teams, there were also teams from Timaru and Milton. Our ctub were ably represented by Messrs Thomson, West, Tunibull, Mace, Hodgson, and Burk, and after a very keen struggle succeeded in again winning tho coveted banner. Our No. 2 team also ran well, securing fourth place. The Caversham Harriers are to be congratulated in providing the winner of tin's event (Mr G. M'Knight). South Canterbury Interclub Teams' Race: This event is held annually over a three-mile course at Timaru, but owing to the lack of enthusiasm among tho clubs of South Canterbury, the Timaru Club (holders of the shield) were unable to get any teams to challenge them this season, and, not wishing the event to fall through, invited the various clubs in Dunedin to compete for it. The invitation was accepted by the Dunedin and Caversham Clubs. Our club were represented by Messrs Thomson, West, Mace, Hodgson, Turnbull, Crawford, Templeton, and Anderson. Wo were fortunate in being able to put in a strong team, and, after a hard race, secured this handsome shield. The individual winner was Mr F. J. Frew (Caversham Club). This event provided a splendid outing, and was enjoyed very much by one and all. Tlie second annual Edmond Cup Three-mile Steeplechase was held in Tahuna Park on June 3, and proved very successful. We were able to put in a very good team consisting of Messrs Mace, Hodgson West, Ross, Crawford, Thomson, Turnbull, Melville, M'lnnes, and T. Hodgson, and after a very interesting race tho first-mentioned six succeeded in winning this event. Mr F. G. Frew won first place in the race. During the year we were unfortunate in losing the services of our secretary, Mr A. E. Bonnin, who has been transferred to Westport. Mr Bonnin was a very enthusiastic member, and occupied the position of secretary for three years and endeared himself with all whom he came in contact with. Ho was also a pillar of strength to the Club and an unostcntations worker.
