The Minister of Railways (Mr Millar), accompanied by Mr Rohaync, Mr Whitcombe (Railway Traffic Superintendent for Canterbury), and local M.P.s, inspected the Faii-lie branch line this morning. The Minister (says a P.A. wire) granted a request for a faster passenger train service between Timaru and Fairiie on Saturdays, stating that the returns showed this branch to be financially sound. The train commences running on Saturday next, and will be _ given a two-months' trial. The Minister caught the first express north, and goes on to Wellington this evening to attend a meeting of Cabinet tomorrow.

A new comedy in three acts dealing with New Zealand life of to-day, called 'The Land of Promise,' and written by Messrs H. Bailey and J. Naswith, was presented in Manchester just before the mail left by amateurs in aid of the Lord Mayor's fund for the unemployed. His Honor Mr Justice Williams will reach Dunedin to-morrow by the first express from the South, and will hear the case Turner v. Merry at 11 a.m. on Thursday.

According to the annual return submitted to the Methodist Conference, which opened at Wesley Church, Melbourne, on March 1, the number of adult Methodists in Victoria and Tasmania at the end of September, 1908, was 35,298, being an increase of 505 since September, 1907, when the figures were 34,793.
