FIRES.

At four o'clock this aflemoon the roof of tho small dressing room, between the members' pavilion and the public stand, at Carisbrook, was discovered to b© on fire. A fi.ro broke out shortly after eleven o'clock yesterday morning in a five-roomec wooden house in Lower Elm Row. The rear part of the premises was gutted, while the two front rooms wore slightly damaged. Mr A. King was the occupant of the house, but he and the others had left it the previous evening to go into the country for a holiday. The place, which was owned by Mr W. H. Hutchcson, was insured for £272 in the National Office and the furniture for £125 in ■ the same office. The effects, however, were removed, and suffered little damage. The origin of the fire is unknown. Some scrub set alight to at Leith Valley yesterday morning caused a fire in a house opposite, owned and occupied by Mrs Bruce and family. With the assistance of neighbors the fire was got under before much damage was done. • The house was insured in the Victoria Office.
