Sir Joseph and Lady Ward arrived in Clmstchurch from WelHngtan this morning. They intend to spend the Christmas and New Year holidays there, the Premier, during that period, being Minister in charge of the Exhibition. Mr H. M. Henderson, of South Dunedin, will be a candidate for one of the three vacancies on the Drainage Board next month.

Mr J. E. Hawkins, manager of tie InvßTcargill gasworks, has resigned his position to enter the service of tho Defence Department. Mt Hawkins has been twenty-eight years in the employ of the Invercargiijl Corporation; ho was appointed manager sixteen years ago. He has been an officer for twenty-two years, being appointed colonel subsequent to 1900. We mentioned in these columns last week that either Colonel Hawkins or Colonel Abbott (of Auckland) would tftke the Dunedin district.

The organist of St. Paul's Cathedral played tho ' Funeral March' last night as a tribute of Tespect to the memory of the late Mr A. W. Macarthur, who was for years a member of the choir. Mr A. Downing and Miss F. "Lambeth, two members of St. Paul's choir, who are shortlv to be married, were last night presented with articles of plate. The archdeacon mado the presentation on behalf of tha members of the choir. Mr Charles Earle, sub-editor of tho Wellington ' Evening Post,' has been appointed associate editor. Tho Rev. W. M. Grant has accepted a call to the Port Chalmers Congregational Church. Ho will leave for New Zealand on January 19 It is said that Mr J. R. Mackenzie (Mataura), tho well-known sportsman and stock-breeder, intends to take up his residence permanently in England. Mr Henry Goodie, an old identity of the Colyton district, aged sixty-two, dropped dead at 7.20 on Saturday morning on the Main road near his store. Death was due to heart disease The Gore Brass Band have appointed >±r J. S. Sheohan, of Wellington, conductor. Lieutenant Simonds, of the Torpedo Corps, Wellington, is in Port Chalmers at present, making arrangements for the submarine explosion in connection with the regatta on Boxing Day. Mr "M. Marcus is a passenger for Dunedin this week by the Wirmnera, to make arrangements for the appearance at His Majestv's of the Arral Concert Company. Their dates are January 7. 9. 12. and 15. Mr James Caradus, J.P., of this office, received word this morning of the death of his father, Mr James Caradu6, a highlyrespected colonist, who arrived at Auckland by the Duchess of Argyle in 1842. and was therefore one of the very old identities. Mr Caradus, who had seen life in California, Otago, and the Thames, 6erved his apprenticeship a>> a rope-spinner, and held honor of boing one of the first New Zealanders to represent the colony at an English exhibition, he having sent Home a sample of New Zealand flax for the great show at Hyde Park in 1851; but at a later date he learnt the carpentry trade, and earned his living at that throughout middle life. Mr Caradus was one of the founders of the Hobson street Wesleyan Sunday school—an old institution well remembered by many persons now in tho South. He leaves a very large family to comfort the bereaved wife. Deceased was eighty-three years of age. Colonels Robin, Davies, Collins, and Webb have accepted the positions offered them on the Council of Defence. Major Johnston, whose name has been mentioned in connection with tho remaining vacancy, will be ineligible, as it is understood be returns to England about April next to resume an army position.
