OPIUM PROHIBITION.
CHEMIST STIFFLY FINED. AUCKLAND, December 22. Waiter H. Dawson, an Auckland chemist, was charged with importing opium in a form suitable for smoking, and making a false declaration. Mr Pond, Government analyst, said that in a jar containing over 111b was a mixture of 91ib of opium in a form admirably suited tor smoking. The defence was that the material was bismuth and opium imported for the manufacture of pills. On the charge under the Opium Prohibition Act defendant was fined £IOO and costs (£ls 2s 9d), and for making a false declaration ho was fined £SO and costs (£3 10s).
