FIRES.
GROOM BURNED TO DEATH. AUCKLAND, March 15. A fire at Howick destroyed Crawford's stables. The groom, Harry Cunningham, aged sxty-tbree, was burned to death. The fire was discovered about eleven last night, when it hd a strong hold in the loft where Cunningham slept. No effort could be made to save him. Twenty horses stabled below in tho loft were got out, but four buses, brake, harness, and fodder, of the total value of were destroyed. There wero no insurances. The adjoining convent had a narrow escape, the walls being very badly scorched. DANNEVIRKE, March 15. A fire occurred in the bulk department of Wylie and Co.'s store this morning, and though the main building was saved, the stock was hopelessly damaged by water -and smoke. Insurances: £SOO on the building, and £I,BOO on tho stock. Tho loss is above £1,500.
