AN INDEPENDENT LABOR PARTY.
OPEN HOSTILITY TO THE GOVERNMENT.
[Special to the Star.]
WELLINGTON, January 12. Two meetings—one an open-air gathering and the other in Victoria Hall at Newtown—devoted themselves to the question of an Independent labor party. Both ended with strong resolutions affirming the urgent need for the same. The ‘ Post ’ yesterday afternoon published an interview with Mr Gullett, wherein he pointed out, inter alia, the terribly paralysing effect on the Federal Parliament of fire three-party system, amounting to the temporary failure of Federation. The Newtown meetings, however, never stopped to consider this example. The speeches are curious reading, being every one of uncompromising noconfidence in the Government. The speakers sighed for a return to the Ballance traditions, denounced the Government attitude on the M'Kenzie land policy, and girded up their loins to fight the Farmers’ Union.
