BOWLING.

NEW ZEALAND BOWLING ASSOCIATION. A well-attended meeting of delegates of the above Association was held in the hall of the Stock Exchange last evening. Mr C. T. Paterson, who was voted to the chair, explained that matters in connection with the proposal to unite with the Northern Bowling Association were at present in abeyance. Before submitting a report on this question the Executive had decided to write to the Auckland and Northern Associations, and pending the result of this correspondence nothing would be done in the meantime. The business before the meeting that evening would bo consideration of suggested rules for the control of A and B pennant matches, and the secretary would read the regulations proposed by the Committee who had been instructed to draw them up. After considerable discussion and amendment, the regulations dealing with A and B pennant matches were then adopted. In accordance with notice of motion, Mr R. H. Cottman moved—"That any affiliated club or clubs desirous of holding" a tournament shall first submit the programme to, and obtain the sanction of, the N.Z.B-A."—Mr P. C. Corliss seconded the motion, which, after some discussion, was amended by the inclusion of the words " if they issue a programme " following the word " shall," and carried. During the discussion of the motion Captain Sundsirum and Mr J. A. Haslefct suggested that the Association should vote a small trophy for competition at the Invercargfll tournament. Mr J. W. Smith, who had given notice of motion that the annual tournament of 1904 should be held at Invercaxgill, wrote apologising for absence, and suggesting that the proposal should be allowed to lapse, and the motion lapsed accordingly. Mr W. C. Alinutt moved as follows: "That at the gathering of bowlers usually held on the night before the annua] tournament commences, and when final entries and arrangement of competitions have been dealt with, a vote of all bowlers present be taken in order to ascertain the advisability or otherwise of striving to minimise the habit of driving in order to burn a head, by allot.ting to the player or players opposed to the burner of the head one point per burnt head. —A considerable number of the delegates present intimated that they had been instructed by the Associations they represented to oppose this motion.—Mr Alinutt explained that his reason for moving in this matter was not to stop "driving," but to prevent it from being overdone. In the opinion of many players " driving" was very much , overdone, and for once that it occurred as an accident it occurred twenty times by intention.—After discussion, during which it was pointed out that the motion did not deal satisfactorily with the object aimed at, it was put to the meeting and lost by a considerable majority; and' Mr Alinutt subsequently gave notice of motion as follows: "That in order to minimise the habit of driving with the object of burning a head, a penalty of one point per burnt head shall bo allotted to the player or players opposed to the burner of the head." On the motion of Mr Stewart (secretary) it was resolved—" That the law which governs the throwing of the jack be brought into conformity with that of the Scottish Bowling Association." Mr T. R. Dodds gave notice of motion as under:—"That a clause be added to the rules of the Association as follows: ' That from and after the 24th day of May, 1904, a tournament shall be held annually, under the auspices of the Association; and 6uch tournament shall be held in such places as the annual meeting of the Association shall decide upon at the annual meeting held in October in each year, but so that no tournament shall be held in any one place oftener than once in every three years; and that rule 12 be altered and amended accordingly.'
