CONGO FREE STATE.
THE COMMONS INTERVENE. Press Association—By Telegraph—Ccpyright, LONDON, May 2.1. (Received May 22, at 9.10 a.m.) Lord Cranborne, in the House of Commons, in reply to a question on the Congo Free State atrocities, not altogether satisfying the House, Mr Balfour intervened, and accepted Mr Herbert Samuel's (L.) resolution that the Government should confer with the co-signatories to the Berlin Treaty and Congo Free State, and secure an abatement of the evils and obtain freedom of trade, Mr Samuel consenting to omit that portion of his resolution which affirmed that the Free State had constantly violated treaties.
