MELBOURNE, February 14.
In the House of Representatives, with the approval of the Government, Mr J. C Watson (New South Wales) carried an amendment with reference to the proposed duties on metals and machinery, which are to be imposed when the irori industry has been established with the assistance of bonuses, the amendment providing for the establishment of such manufactures under the direct control of any State Government or the Commonwealth Government. It is proposed that the duty to be fixed at the expiration of the bonus grants on iron and steel, galvanised plate, sheet iron, wire netting, iron and' steel tubes, pipes, and spelter shall be 10 per cert., and on reaper and binder machines mid patents, 15 per cent.
