RAVENSBOURNE REGATTA

Originally a local fixture, nr pretty well so, patronised charilv hy outside sportsmen and tbe town public, the Ravensboume icgatta has gradually grown in importance, until it now deserves to be regarded as one of the chief waterside outings of the year. Many persons who as a rale take no notice of regattas make a point of attending this. They find Ravensbourne a handy place to get to and to return from; they cannot fail to appreciate the hearty welcome that awaits ail and sundry; they sc? the racing well managed and conducted right under their eyes, so that it is possible, unless one actually goes to sleep, to leam what is going on ; fine weather seems a certainty; and the afternoon’s holiday is inexpensive. This year all the advantages enumerated were experienced, and the regatta proved a thorough success, not only as an enjoyable ontiug, but also from a sporting point ■ f view, the finishes being in several cases extraordinarily close. In tie first sailing race the winner passed the line only ssec ahead of the second boat, and in another race no more than 2sec separated second and third. The handicapping, too, was really excellent. A conple of examples will illustrate the correctness of the calculations made by Messrs Holier, Sinclair, and Sutherland, the Otago Yacht Club haudicappers. In the 20ft Open Boat Race the corrected time for the three placed boats leads thus; —Corset, Ihv 26min 55sec; Shamrock, Ihr 27min; Jane, Ihr 27mm 7sec. Corset thus beat Shamrock by ssec, and Shamrock gained second place from Jane by 7sec. In the Third Class Yacht Race the corrected times of the boats were: —Eileen, Ihr 16min 58sec; Dream, Ihr 17min 28see ; Rum, Hit 17mm 40sec; Kinora, Ihr 17min 42sec; Lennox Lass, Ihr 19min 59scc. Great interest was taken in the Third Class Yacht Race, owing to two new boats making their first appearance m public. Mr J. M’Lelian’s Eileen was the most fancied for this event, and she proved herself equal to the task of lowering the colors of the champions in that class (Rnru and Kia-th-a), although she did not have much to spare. Lennox Lass sailed well, but would have done better in a stronger breeze. It was a steady whole-sail breeze from the north-east until about 4.50, after which the wind quickly dropped, then shifted to S.W. and KE. as the prelude to a calm. Mr J. B. Nelson acted as timekeeper for tho sailing events, and carried out his duties in a highly satisfactory manner. The following are the points scored by the boats for the third series of Yacut Club races:

Open Boats,—Dash 5, Carbine 2. Third Class Yachts.---Dream 3, Rum Kia-Ora 1.

Second Class Yachts.—Waifciri 3, Irene 2, Winifred 1. First Class Yachts.—Trilby 5, White Wings 2, Ijeader 1. At no lime was the water ton rough tor the rowing events. The eights crews, fearing the jobble, did not start from town, if they had ventnred they could have got off their race, but of course they could not prophesy on the subject. The cutter Madge was again kindly lent as flagship by Mr P. Sutherland, and the Garrison Band stationed ashore played a number of selections during the afternoon, whilst for the further entertainment of the holiday-makers tea was dispensed at a nominal charge, this duty being undertaken by Misses Mitchell, Gray, Webber, Page, Smith, Minis, and Cope. The whole regatta was excellently managed by an energetic committee, amongst whom we noticed Mr T. Ross, Mr S. T. Bolton, Mr H. K. Moller (acting for his brother, Mr Eric Moller, who was called array), Messrs P. Sutherland, A. J. Sinclair, J. James, Leslie Wilson, E. B. Hayward, Vv. J. Waters, A- E. Jay, W. Cntlcn, J. Nelson, J. Blackie, E. Kellett, C. Grcenslade, and W. Barker, with Messrs J. A. Millar and J. F. Arnold representing the patrons. The sailing races were managed in conjunction with the Otago Yacht Club. The results were as follow :

OPEN BOATS (16-footers). First prize. £1 and challenge cup (presented ly Mr H. E. Moller); second prize, 10s. Volunteer (W. Dougall), 7min, Ihr 36min 45sec 1 Hornet (D. Anderson), scr, Ihr 36min 50sec 2 Canterbury (A. Wiseman), smin, Ihr 43min 45sec 3 Also started; Vigilant (H. Ruclic. scr), Ihr 46min 32sec; Portree (D. Matheson, 9min), Ihr 49min lOsec. A good start, from which Hornet quickly drew clear and held a fair lead till reaching the narrow waters for the finish, where a series of short tacks had to be made to end between the punt and the flagship. Here Hornet and Volunteer crossed on opposite tacks, and Hornet had to give way and go about. Volunteer, standing on, thus got in ssec ahead. Canterbury finished a good third on a Gravesend luff. OPEN BOATS (20-footers). First prize, £1 and challenge cup (presented by Mr H. K. Moller); second prize, 10s. Corset (B. Asher, 12min), Ihr 38min 55sec 1 Shamrock (W. Watson, 4min), Ihr 31min 2 Jane (A. Inncs, 6min), Ihr 33rain 7sec 5 Also started: Just in Time (J. Cordelia, scr), Ihr 37min; Daisy (H. Percy, lOmin), Ihr 39min 55sec ; Dash (George and Co., 3min), Ihr oOnnn 18sec; Carbine (Mahs and Co., 7min), Ihr 46min 15sec. Jane crossed the line rather too smartly and had to fc back, and Shamrock took the lead of Just in Time. Shamrock was 4min ahead at tie half-distance. Jane close up third- Just in Time met with bad luck up by the threelegs, fouling some other vessel, which poked her jibboom through Cordelia’s mainsail and ripped it up from the foot. Corset shaped well in the final thrash home, and, finishing fourth, won on. her handicap. MAIDEN FOUR OARED OUTRICGED GIG RACE. Prizes, £2 and ss. DJYB.C. (F. Dawson stroke, A. Watson. D. Fraser, J. Brown) 1 O.R.C. (J. W. Matthewson stroke, E. Thomson, W. Harvey, W. Amiers. W. Brown) ... ■ “ N. (J. Breen stroke, C. Neilson, J. Douglas, J. Hutcheson) 3 Also started; P.C.R.C. (G. Leightbourne stroke, F. Bennett, N. M'Donald, C. Colthorpe), Q.D.B.C. (C. Macdonald stioke, J. Shearer, J. It. Moore, J. Methers). 1 The yacht Goldseeker got in the way of the Port crew on the way down, thus depriving Leightboume’s men of what seemed to be a good chance. The D.A.B.C. and O. reached the half mark together, but O.R.C. and North End fouled on the turn, and D.A.B.C. secured an advantage which they made use of to lead home by five lengths, a half-length dividing second think. Eprt-did not finish,.

THIRD CLASS YACHT RACE. Prises, £2, 10s, and ss. Eileen (J. M'Lennan), scratch, lb I6min 58sec ; 1 Dream (M'Culloch and Co.), 3min, Ih 25mm 28sec 2 Burn (Davys Bros.), scratch, lb 17min 40sec ... 3 Also started: Kia-Ora (D. Eileen hung at the start, having apparently dropped her spinaker overboard, and Kia-Ora got away with the lead. Gem retired in the first round, and 1 so did Rata, and at the half-mark .Eileen was ahead of Kia-Ora, Bum putting up her helm half a minute later, with Lennox Lass fourth. In the beat for home Rum and Kia-Ora gained a little on Eileen in the dropping breeze, butthe new yacht won with plenty to spare,' and did very well considering that she sailed without her spinaker. A splendid contest for second position resulted in Rum beating Kia-Ora by 2scc, but Dream, finishing fifth, behind Lennox Lass, was by the handicap made the winner of second money. FIRST CLASS YACHT RACE. First prize, £1 and coil of yacht line (presented by Messrs Donaghy and Co.); second prize, Lbs. Trilby (W. Gotten), scratch, Hi llmin 40scc I Whire Wings (Lane and Co.), 4mm, Ih 18min 15se c ••. ... 2 Leader (Webber and Co.), Imin, ih 15min 27sec 3 Trilby moved away smartest, and though Leader beat her on the run up.
