Of those selected eight are volunteers, one is a ■ returned contingenter, and nine have had no previous service. The men reach camp at Forbury to-night. CAMP NOTEsT The first batch of seventy-two men from Dunedin was sworn in this afternoon. They were drawn up before Captain Nicolson, who gave them a few words of advice, telling them that as far as he knew it depended upon themselves to gain commissions. A number of men are expected from the country this evening, and about 250 will arrive from the West Coast, Nelson, Canterbury, and other places to-morrow. Sixty-six tents have been placed in position. LOCAL NOTES! Sergeant-major MDonald commenced the work of enrolling at Forbury Park this afternoon, when over seventy mm reported themselves. Dunedin’s quota numbers ninety-two. Over twenty men were put through further tests this afternoon. Seventy-nine men having now been picked out, only thirteen remain to be selected. AH the preliminary work was put in hand at Forbury Park this afternoon, so that tbe camp will be in full swing in the course of a day or so. The tests for the Balclutha division allotment of twelve men were held on Wednesday. Altogether about sixty presented themselves, and the day was spent in putting the applicants through the various tests. Ultimately the following were selected:—Alex. Adam, Robert Robson (Clutha Mounted Rifles), John Darling
(Kaitangata Rifles), J. W. Parker (Stirling), R. Laing (Warepa), Geo. Low, John* Duff (Baldutha), J. Voight, J, Burke (Pukerau), A. Webb (Kaitangata), R. S. Duckworth (Stirllntr). Although forty horses were offered for selection for the Ninth Contingent at Baldutha on Wednesday, the selectors only purchased two, the majority being either unsuitable or the owners wanting too high a price. ASHBURTON, February 7. Twenty-six men have been finally selected for the Ashburton section of 'the Ninth Contingent. One walked twenty-five miles to be in time. Fourteen are, or bare been, members of volunteer corps. There were about seventy candidates. They leave tomorrow for Dunedin.
