NATIVES IN COUNCIL.
WANGANUI, February 7
An interesting native meeting was concluded at Rata last night, about 300 natives being present, and representing nearly all the tribes on the West Coast. The Hon James Carroll attended on’Wednesday, and spoke hopefully of the native race under the recent legislation of the Government. Their Maori Councils were in full swing, and the reports of their work showed a o-eneral awakening to the needs for improved social and moral life. A number of important resolutions were passed aimmg at widening the powers of the Councils so as tr embrace impounding, limited judicial power in the matter of small debts and minor offences, and limited rating powers. Resolutions were passed last night (1) 9° ni : bating Mr Piram’s attack on the Maori Land' Act, and (2) condemnmg the attacks of the foreign Press on England, and expressing the willingness of the Maori race to stand by the British flag at all hazards.
