Mr M’Gowan intimated that his endeavor was to make the values of tie land as level as possible. If an amending BiH were brought down he would recommend that one assessor be elected by local bodies, in a similar manner to that whereby representatives on harbor and charitable aid boards are elected. He could not _ give a rebate on lands the revenue of which was derived from wool, and which the deputation alleged had decreased in value owing to the low price of wool. The only way he could do it would be to revalue th§ whole district, and he did not think that any serious fall of values had yet taken place owing to the low price of wool. He expressed the hope that under the new Valuation Act there would be less friction than under the previous statute.
