FIRE RATES.

A PROTEST AGAINST THE PRESENT TARIFF. CHRISTCHURCH, February 7. Representatives of the Farmer's’ _ Union in the North and South Islands waited on the annual meeting of the Underwriters’ Association at Wellington on Thursday, and placed before then the question of a reduction of the fire rates on farmers’ buildings. They stated that several schemes had been submitted, and would have to be taken into consideration unless the existing companies saw their way to make a substantial reduction, in present rates, which the deputation alleged were 100 high, being regulated by the desire to make up the losses by large fires in the cities. The decision of the Association will be communicated to the representatives of the union in a few days.
