THE SWAGGER AND THE CHINAMAN.
* At Marton the other day a good-hearted Chinaman entertained a swagger, but drew the line at giving him a "dose down" for the night in his shop. The swagger promptly went outside,' heaved a piece of road metal through one of the windows, and decamped. That was on Saturday, but on Sunday, hearing that he was " wanted," he at once gave himself up to a constable, there being every indication that, as the shades of evening were falling fast, he might as well have lodgings at the expense of the State. When brought before the Bench, he admitted the charge preferred against him, and received a sentence of fourteen days. As he left the court he pathetically remarked that he wished it had been three months, for the prisoners were treated so well in gaol that it was far better being there these cold days and nights than tramping about the "bloomin"' country and sleeping in stables or outhouses.
