CECIL RHODES AS A HUMORIST.
» Responding to an address' from the Typographical Association of Cape Town on April 22 Mr Rhodes said :—" Ah, it was a map that did the whole thing. Now, you know, I might tell you a story about the map of the world. Everything that happens in ibe world comes about not by design, but entirely by accident. This map of the world chat.ged the map of Africa. At the time of which I am speaking the hinterland of the Transvaal was the north, and I think that President Kruger rightly thought so ; but, unfortunately, I saw the map—l suppose the printers got "that map out—and the conclusion which I canie to was this: that the human race was increasing at an enormous rate, but that the area of the world was vary limited. lam told that those planets which we are looking at are occupied, but I don't know whether the scientists will make a Jacob's ladder to them—but I don't think they will do so in my time. However, Uking the increase of the world into consideration, it was very clear to mo that the unoccupied or unclaimed territory of the world should be taken as speedily as possible ; and that is the secret of the northern expansion. I interfered with the action of my friend President Kruger. I know I did, but it was utterly fair play—thoroughly fair pl a y_and I think that I, at any rate, won the game of cards, and I hope that the community assembled here to-uigbt will make use of that result."—(Cheers.) The Liverpool Stock Exchange Committee purohased for extending the Exchange a strip of property adjoining the present building at a price of £227 per square yard, being at the rate of over £1,000,000 per aore. " How do you pronounce the last syllable of that word 'butterine'?" asked the customer. " The last syllable is silent," stiffly replied the tradesman.
