The amount of revenue collected at the Custom-house on goods cleared to-day for consumption was £929 12s (Id.

RAILWAY RETURNS,

The return of railway receipts and expenditure for the four weeks ended 14th September shows the receipts to have been £74,173 13s 4d, and the expenditure £55,50811s 7d. In the corresponding period of last year the figures wereßeceipts, £71,4(55 9s 6d; expenditure, £56,808 6s. Of the revenue the North Island lines contributed £27,260 (is 7d, as against £26,615 0s 9d for the corresponding four weeks of last year; and the Middle island lines £46,913 6s 9d, as against £44,850 8s 9d. The North Island lines absorbed of the expenditure £20,725 13s, as against £21.46712s lOd, and the Middle Island lines £34,782 18s 7d, as against £35,34013s 2d. The proportion of expenses to revenue on the several lines, calculated on an annual average, for the respective periods of 1895 and 1894 was as follows North Island: Kawakawa, 79.05,157.71; Whar garei, 81 17,89.84; Kaihu, 57.87,100.65; Auckland, 73.87, 76.54; Napier-Taranaki, 72.90, 72.50; Wellington, 71.53,78.14.
